Case Study: Graffiti Removal at Mumbles Skate Park and Local Promenade for Swansea Council & Mumbles Community Council
Overview:
In a recent project commissioned by Mumbles Community Council & Swansea Council, our team was tasked with the graffiti removal at two iconic locations: Mumbles Skate Park and the local promenade. These areas, popular with both locals and tourists, had been targeted by graffiti vandals, compromising the aesthetic appeal of the spaces. The project required a careful approach, as the surfaces involved varied significantly—from concrete and stone to metal and wood—each requiring a tailored solution for effective graffiti removal.
Project Scope:
Location 1: Mumbles Skate Park
Location 2: Mumbles Local Promenade
Client: Swansea Council
Date: December 2025
The graffiti had not only disfigured the surfaces but, in some cases, had begun to cause degradation due to the type of paint and materials used by vandals. Removing the graffiti in a manner that didn’t damage or erode the surfaces was critical, especially in the case of the skate park, where safety and the integrity of surfaces used by children and adults alike were paramount.

Challenges:
Varied Surfaces:
The biggest challenge lay in the diversity of surfaces present across the two locations. Mumbles Skate Park features concrete ramps, metal barriers, and wooden elements, while the promenade includes stone walls, metal railings, and paved areas. Each surface requires different graffiti removal techniques and chemicals to ensure both efficacy and safety.Environmental Sensitivity:
As these locations are frequented by the public and situated near the coast, the use of eco-friendly and safe chemicals was a priority. Harsh chemicals could not only harm the surfaces but also pose risks to the surrounding environment, including nearby water sources.Weather Considerations:
The unpredictable Welsh weather posed an additional layer of complexity. Rain and cold conditions made it more difficult to use certain chemicals effectively, while some areas were exposed to saltwater, requiring particular care in choosing the right cleaning agents.

Approach:
Our approach involved three critical phases: assessment, planning, and execution.
Surface Assessment:
Before starting any work, a thorough inspection of the affected areas was carried out. Different types of graffiti were identified, ranging from spray paint to markers and stickers. The texture and material of each surface were also assessed to determine the appropriate removal method and products.Customized Graffiti Removal Methods:
Given the varying surface types, we selected different methods for each one:Concrete (Skate Park Ramps and Walls):
For concrete surfaces, we used a biodegradable graffiti remover specifically designed for porous materials. This product was applied to the affected areas and left to dwell for 15-30 minutes to break down the paint. A low-pressure steam cleaning system was then used to remove the softened graffiti, ensuring no damage was done to the rough surface of the concrete.Metal Surfaces (Skate Park Railings, Promenade Railings, Bins, Electricity boxes):
For the metal railings, we opted for a non-abrasive chemical remover suitable for metals. This solution, which is safe on both painted and unpainted metal, was applied to the graffiti. Once the paint began to lift, a gentle scrubbing technique was used, followed by pressure washing to ensure no residue remained.Wooden Surfaces (Benches) :
Wooden surfaces required a much gentler approach. We used a natural solvent-based graffiti remover that would not strip or damage the wood. A soft-bristled brush was used for application, followed by a thorough rinsing to ensure the wood was not saturated.Stone (Promenade Walls):
The stone promenade walls were cleaned using an acid-free gel remover, which is highly effective on natural stone without causing degradation. This was followed by light scrubbing to ensure complete removal without affecting the integrity of the stonework.
Safety and Environmental Considerations:
Throughout the process, we ensured that all chemicals used were environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and safe for use around public spaces. We also took precautions to minimize the risk of runoff into the nearby sea by applying a protective barrier around affected areas.
Results:
The project was completed successfully, with all graffiti removed from the skate park and promenade surfaces. Each area was restored to its original condition, without any damage to the underlying surfaces.
Mumbles Skate Park:
The ramps and surrounding infrastructure were brought back to their original state, with no signs of deterioration. The park was ready to be used by skaters and families, with the graffiti removal ensuring a clean and safe environment for all visitors.Mumbles Promenade:
The promenade now reflects the beauty of the coastline and the charm of the area. The stone walls and metal railings are free of unsightly tags, enhancing the overall appearance of the area and ensuring that tourists and locals can enjoy the space in its natural beauty.
Key Takeaways:
Customised Solutions are Essential: Different surfaces demand different solutions. What works for concrete may not be effective on wood or metal. Tailoring the method ensures that the work is both effective and safe.
Eco-Friendly Approach is Non-Negotiable: Graffiti removal doesn’t have to come at the expense of the environment. Using biodegradable, non-toxic chemicals helps protect local ecosystems.
Attention to Detail Matters: From surface preparation to cleaning technique, every step needs to be carefully planned and executed to ensure the longevity and integrity of the surfaces involved.
Conclusion:
This graffiti removal project in Mumbles highlights the importance of taking a bespoke approach to cleaning and restoration, especially when dealing with a variety of surfaces. By using the right products and techniques, we were able to deliver exceptional results that not only restored the areas to their former glory but also provided long-term protection from future damage.
For any future graffiti removal projects, whether in urban parks or historic landmarks, choosing a contractor with the right expertise and equipment is key to ensuring a job well done.
